Get Organic at the Open Market

September is officially ‘Organic September’ according to our fine friends at the Soil Associaton, and here at Brighton Open Market we have a selection of goodies on offer to tempt your organic taste buds from a range of experts and food lovers!

Foodshed is a veritable organic one-stop shop, with organic vegetables, eggs, milk, grains, pulses, spices & rices. If in doubt Josie is usually on hand to guide you through all they offer.

Brighton Apothecary have a range of organic goods, including fantastic range of Pukka herb teas.

Over at the Ditchling Road end is our newest addition to the market – Rainbow Organic Chocolate who make delicious hand-made chocolates, whilst over towards London Rd flying the organic flag is also Brighton Naturally who as their name suggests have a range of products from raw chocolate to fruit smoothies that will be made in front of you by Ray & Dandy, that are all free from pesticides.

Chi trading & the Honey Shop have a wide selection of organic loose leaf teas and honeys, whilst all of the homemade hummus from  Smorls uses organic chickpeas and they also sell a range of organic oils, vinegars and olives.

To wash it all down Pacta are on hand to advise you which of their delicious organic wines would best compliment your meal. They import ‘least intervention’ wines from the Adriatic Coast which all have no added sulphates, and to give that added personal touch Judith & Trevor know all of their wine producers personally and can tell you the story behind every producer of the bottles of wine that they sell.

We have a variety of casual traders at Brighton Open Market who sell organic – such as Hook & Son who bring their organic raw milk to our market every Saturday. They were recently the subject of a film which wowed the crowds at Sundance Film Festival, but we’re glad to say that all the fame hasn’t gone to cows’ heads and they are still very down to earth!

Fairy dress maker funds new market stall at the Open Market by going on Deal or No Deal!

Beth Whitehall has been making beautiful fairy dresses for over 15 years and selling them at markets and festivals around the country. When she heard that The Open Market was due to re-open in June, 2014, she was desperate to finally have a permanent home for her fairy fashions but she didn’t have the capital needed to start-up her business. One afternoon, she happened to come across information about how to apply to be a contestant on Deal or No Deal, and she thought “why not?” And, much to her surprise, she was accepted!

I never imagined that I would be able to fund my business by appearing on a game show but I’m so pleased to have been given the opportunity. Already Unit 22 is busy and orders for fairy dresses and coming in all the time! – Beth Whitehall

Beth is appearing on the show throughout August and she is the player on the September 4th episode. Watch and see how today’s proud owner of Unit 22 even manages to get Noel Edmonds into one of her fairy dresses!

Unit 22 is now open.  Beth and Charlotte make beautiful, hand-made fairy dresses and also offer a lovely range of locally produced fashion and accessories for girls and women.
